Description and Highlights
of River Delta Unified School District
River Delta Unified School District (unified in 1967 with 13 different river
community school districts) is located along the Sacramento River within
three counties--Sacramento, Solano, and Yolo. Although the District is a
tri-county district, it is managed by and is a part of the Sacramento County Office
of Education in Sacramento. Within these three counties, the District serves
the Sacramento River communities of Clarksburg, Hood, Courtland, Locke, Walnut
Grove, Ryde, City of Isleton, Birds Landing, Collinsville and the City of Rio Vista. RDUSD
has currently an average enrollment of 2040 students. Here, in the Sacramento Delta area, where the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers
converge, each community is unique with its culture, rituals, and traditions. The history of
the Chinese and other settlers is still apparent in buildings constructed some 100 to
150 years ago. Within the District's communities, one can find narrow streets
shaded by large, overhanging trees.Due to the maze of rivers and sloughs that make up the Delta, the District is
located in the heart of a great recreational area. Boating, water skiing, swimming,
and fishing become favorite past times. For those who enjoy the mountains and
snow, Lake Tahoe and the High Sierras are within easy driving distance. The
metropolitan areas of Sacramento, Stockton, Oakland, and San Francisco provide
ample opportunities for city life. The District is located near many outstanding colleges, junior and
vocational colleges, and universities. California State University Sacramento,
University of the Pacific, and the University of California Davis are all within
commuting distance. The main industry is agriculture. Within this Delta area
are some of the richest farmland in the United States. Fruits, grains,
and vegetables--as well wineries, sheep, cattle, horses and "wind"--are among
the major "crops" seen in the Delta.
